Lakeland routs East Valley

| September 14, 2014 9:00 PM

SPOKANE VALLEY - Chris Washburn got the ball rolling with two big runs in the second quarter for the Lakeland Hawks on Friday, getting the momentum started in a 41-10 nonleague rout of the East Valley Knights.

"Our kids are doing a good job and they're prparing well," Lakeland coach Tim Kiefer said. "I think we came out flat. East Valley gave us an even (defensive) front. But once we got it rolling, we got a couple of big plays in the second quarter. Chris Washburn had a couple of big runs to get us going, Ty (Derrick) had a big run right after that. We had to shake the cobwebs off. Our defense really came to play, they were hitting hard and they did a great job."

LAKE CITY

from B1

Louie-McGee returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 Lake City lead. He took a swing pass in the right flat from Goggin and zipped 69 yards for a 21-7 lead after one quarter. After Central Valley (0-2) muffed a punt, Louie-McGee swept in from 1 yard out late in the second quarter for a 50-14 halftime lead.

Early in the third quarter - shortly before the sprinklers interrupted play - Louie-McGee picked off a deep pass down the sideline by Tanner Sloan, and nearly returned it the distance, before being tackled at the Bears' 1.

"We're excited about our football team," Lake City coach Van Troxel said. "Coming in to the game, we needed to not worry about who we were playing; we need to continue to get better. I feel good about our guys; we came to compete."

Lake City did have three turnovers in the first half, two of which led to Central Valley scores. CV finished with five turnovers, the T-Wolves four.

Lake City, ranked third in 5A in the state media poll, outgained Central Valley 469-222, the third straight game the T-Wolves totaled more than 400 yards of offense. Newby rushed for 101 yards on 12 carries as Lake City ran for 332 yards. Louie-McGee added 62 yards on five carries, Goggin 57 yards on eight carries, and Kirk McKenzie ran for 59 yards on nine carries, including a 6-yard TD run in the third quarter.

Sloan, under pressure much of the night, was 13 of 35 for 128 yards and three interceptions. Lake City senior Walker Jones was a frequent visitor to the Central Valley pocket, and he and Sam Slusser both slammed into Sloan on a pass play late in the first half, resulting in a duck intercepted by Scott Helsper.

Drew Shipley's fumble recovery early in the second quarter led to Newby's first TD run, a 2-yard score that made it 28-7 Lake City.

Central Valley lost at second-ranked Coeur d'Alene 50-14 last week.

Lake City plays host to Shadle Park of the GSL next Friday.

TROJANS

from B1

The Trojans (1-2) were in good shape through three quarters, taking a 27-22 lead on Collin Hildreth's second touchdown run late in the third period, then stopping U-High on a 3-and-out to end the quarter.

On the first play of the fourth, a Post Falls fumble after a reception gave the Titans (2-0) momentum, and quarterback Logan O'Neil threw the third of his four TD passes, hitting Tanner Chase just inside the end zone sideline for a 30-27 lead with 10:39 remaining.

U-High took command on its next series, as bruising running back Bryce Williamson broke a tackle on third-and-long for a 40-yard draw play.

Four plays later, on fourth down at the Trojan 25, Griffin Thorson burned Post Falls with a double move and was wide open for a 25-yard touchdown pass.

"In the second half, we really stayed with what we wanted to do, and that's run the football," Titans coach Rob Bartlett said. "That forced them to bring more people (to stop the run), and on that double move play, we were able to block long enough to beat their press coverage."

Led by Williamson's 28 carries for 209 yards, U-High piled up 393 yards of offense. O'Neil had 157 yards passing and also scored on a QB sneak.

"I thought their offensive and defensive line were pretty physical," Hinz said of U-High. "Their back (Williamson) runs hard, and their quarterback did a good job directing their offense."

Post Falls was led by quarterback Dalton Thompson's 92 yards rushing and 150 yards passing, with touchdown tosses to Jacob Koski and Kaden Nelson. Austin Jensen added 86 yards rushing on only nine carries.

"That's an excellent Post Falls team, and we went back and forth with them all game," Bartlett said. "We see them in the Border League (camp), and we love being able to come over here and play them now. It's great to rekindle some old rivalries, and North Idaho has some fantastic football."

The Trojans host East Valley next Friday in their homecoming game.

VIKINGS

again, moving into Ferris territory on a 40-yard pass from Lee to Cole Williams, but had the drive stall out on a botched snap on third down.

The teams exchanged turnovers in the second quarter as Gibson Green recovered a Ferris fumble and returned it to the 14-yard line. On the next play of the drive, Coeur d'Alene returned the favor, as Ferris recovered a fumble by Lee on the 20.

On the ensuing drive, Ferris forced another fumble, which was recovered by Joel Kaplan at their own 24-yard line.

With 43 seconds remaining in the first half, Coeur d'Alene drove to the Ferris 29-yard line, but a late field goal fell short just before halftime.

Green intercepted a Mitch Pike pass off a deflection to give the Vikings good field position at the start of the third at the Ferris 29. Brennen Barber gave Coeur d'Alene a 10-0 lead with a 29-yard field goal with 9:37 left in the third quarter.

After a Ferris punt, junior KC Hutchings caught a Lee pass and outran the Saxon defense for a 71-yard touchdown to give Coeur d'Alene a 17-0 lead.

Drew Berger jumped in front of a Ferris pass and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown to give Coeur d'Alene a 24-0 lead late in the third quarter.

Coeur d'Alene finished with four turnovers, Ferris two.

"We've got to do a better job of keeping the ball after putting it on the ground like 5,000 times," Amos said. "We've still got to take care of the ball."

Coeur d'Alene travels to Moses Lake next Friday. The Vikings are the No. 2 team in this week's 5A media prep football poll.

Ferris, which opened the season on Sept. 5 with a 20-13 loss at Olympia, is ranked 10th in this week's Associated Press Washington high school football poll.
