City sees increase in bicycle thefts

| September 11, 2014 9:00 PM

Bicycle thefts are on the rise in Coeur d'Alene.

The police department has taken 24 stolen bicycle reports since Aug. 1.

Some of the bicycles have been expensive models.

The reported total loss to the 24 victims is $23,105.

"We want our residents and visitors of our city to enjoy their bicycles and not be victims of theft," said Police Chief Lee White in a press release. "Please practice theft prevention tips and call the police department to report any suspicious activity."

Most of the bicycle thefts - from bike racks, residential garages left open, the backs of vehicles, and from recreation areas - have occurred in the city's northwest and downtown areas.

Detectives are working leads in this investigation and believe some of the thefts are being done by the same suspects.
