Cardinal men show the right touch

COEUR d'ALENE - Lake City High product Alec Johnson had an assist in the first half and scored from 35 yards out on a free kick in the second half, leading the North Idaho College Cardinals past the Walla Walla Warriors 5-1 in an Northwest Athletic Conference East Division matchup Tuesday at Eisenwinter Field.

"We played with a better 1-2 touch in the second half," NIC coach Ken Thompson said. "Alec's shot was a nice ball and Matt (Howard) scored from 25 yards out, and they were two really good finishes."

Braden Ridgewell, Jake Kraut and Tony Quesnell also had goals for NIC (4-0, 3-0 NWAC), which hosts Chemeketa on Friday.

"It speaks well of our depth to have guys off our bench that any given day might be in the starting lineup," Thompson said. "They're a competitive group in practice."

AJ Montes scored on a penalty kick in the 75th minute for Walla Walla (2-3-1, 2-2).

COEUR d'ALENE - Cassy van der May had three saves for the Cardinals, who played to a draw with the Warriors in an East Division Northwest Athletic Conference match at Eisenwinter Field.

"We had plenty of chances to score, but either hit it directly at the Walla Walla keeper (Sasha Holt) or missed the net," NIC coach Dan Hogan said. "In the second, a Walla Walla defender cleared one of our shots off the goal line and we had another called back on a questionable offsides."

NIC (2-0-3, 1-0-3 NWAC) hosts Chemeketa on Friday.

Sasha Holt had 11 saves for Walla Walla (0-3-3, 0-1-3).
