Post Falls lets one slip away late at Skyview

| September 6, 2014 9:00 PM

NAMPA - Post Falls was a mere 44 seconds away from winning its second game of the season.

Then Skyview running back Cody Ghighina spoiled the party.

Ghighina scored on a 5-yard touchdown run up the middle with 44 seconds left in the game Friday night, giving the 4A Hawks of Nampa a 26-20 win.

"We gave the game away in a sense," Post Falls coach Jeff Hinz said. "Skyview is a good football team. They're ranked No. 2 in the 4A. There were times we played some good football, there were times we didn't play good football."

In the second half, the 5A Trojans (1-1) lost two fumbles and also had to settle for two field goals on drives which stalled inside the 5-yard line. One of them came with 2:42 left in the game that ended in a 34-yard field goal by Nathan Gregory that put Post Falls ahead, 20-19.

"That was the difference in the game for us," Hinz said. "We created a turnover ourselves, then we gave it right back to them. We had five big penalties in the first half that elimiated our rhythm."

Post Falls running back Austin Jensen rushed for 86 yards on 18 carries and added 34 yards on five receptions against the Hawks (1-1). He scored two touchdowns, including the only Trojan TD in the second half with 7:50 left in the third quarter. Quarterback Dalton Thompson went 16 for 30 with 144 yards, no touchdowns and an interception, rushing for another 39 yards on 12 carries.

Post Falls hosts University on Friday.

SPIRIT LAKE -Daniel Buck ran for 149 and two touchdowns, as the Tigers rolled past the Rams in a nonleague game at Van Tuinstra Stadium.

"We split touchdowns in the early part of the first quarter," Timberlake coach Roy Albertson said. "I thought our line did a good job on both sides of the ball of taking over the game. There were a lot of big holes for our backs to run through."

Three different Tiger running backs each scored one touchdown - Josh Lampert, Levi Shaffer and Brandon Hausladen - as Timberlake (2-0) dominated in the running game after outgaining Riverside of Chattaroy, Wash., 331-49.

Tigers quarterback Ryan Starr threw for three touchdowns on 9-of-14 passing and 161 yards.

"I thought that our whole offense really got to share in the whole game," Albertson said. "All of our skill kids made big plays in the game. Defensively, starting in the second quarter, we were able to take the game over. Our goal was to shut them out in the second half and we were able to do that. We're solid on both sides of the ball."

Timberlake plays next Friday in nonleague play at Asotin.
