Leslie Bunker Maynard Jewett, 73

Leslie Bunker Maynard Jewett, 73, of Spirit Lake, died quietly at home on Aug. 21, 2014, surrounded by her family and her beloved pets, after a courageous year-long battle with lung cancer.

The daughter of Audra Nadene Kerns and Wesley Roy Bunker, Leslie was born Oct. 19, 1940, in Indianapolis, Ind., and graduated from Wauneta High School in Wauneta, Neb., and the Mary Lanning School of Nursing in Hastings, Neb.

Leslie worked for many years as a nurse case manager in psychiatric hospitals and institutions in Nebraska, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas and Washington, and as a traveling nurse on cruise ships in the Caribbean.

An avid gardener, inspired cook and animal lover, Mrs. Jewett was also a direct descendent of American frontiersman Daniel Boone and honored his service with membership in the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, since 2003.

Leslie was preceded in death by her son, Curtis Boone Maynard, in 2010; and her parents. She is survived by her husband, Larry Jewett of Spirit Lake; son Charles Kerns Maynard of Yelm, Wash.; son and daughter-in-law Michael Kerns Maynard (Marie) of Spokane, Wash.; daughter-in-law Jolee Newell Maynard of Madison, Wis.; brother Richard Romine of Wauneta, Neb.; and sisters Nancy Bunker Bowen of Athens, Ga., and Sally Bunker May of Pendergrass, Ga.; and five grandchildren.

A memorial gathering open to all family and friends will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014, at the Jewett home in Spirit Lake. Donations in Leslie's memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project (woundedwarriorproject.org).
