Day of Service is Sept. 13

| September 4, 2014 9:00 PM

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are ready to roll up their sleeves with the annual Day of Service, this year targeting projects in Hayden and Hayden Lake as well as the needs of two local residents.

Beginning at 8 a.m. Sept. 13, volunteers will tackle several projects to beautify and maintain sites in the area, including painting the silo, planting trees and bushes in Stoddard Park, landscaping for the Hospice of North Idaho Hospice House and landscaping, planting and cleanup at McCall Park.

Two service projects will assist a disabled resident who will receive a new roof and another individual who will receive carpentry work as well as a power-wash and new coat of paint on her home. These services will be provided at no cost to the individuals and are done by community volunteers.

The Day of Service theme is once again "Working together to make things better." Several committees from 10 different LDS congregations have been meeting with area city councils for the past few months and taking referrals from residents.

Steve Woods and his wife, Ann, are chairing the entire effort with nine sub-chairs on the various projects. A goal for the Day of Service is to make a difference in the lives of individuals as well as affect the city on a larger scale.

Organizers are still in need of volunteers, funding and donations, such as lifts needed to paint the Children's Village home and the Stoddard Park silo. Families, Girl or Boy Scout troops, youth groups, church groups, service organizations and individuals who want to be involved are welcome to join and lend a hand. It is free to participate.

The Day of Service will end with a barbecue and other fun activities in McCall Park at noon. McCall Park is located at 9393 N. Strahorn Road in Hayden Lake.
