Philip Gleason, a fugitive on the run from Washington state, was apprehended Thursday night in Wardner by the U.S. Marshals Service.

Although Gleason had committed no crime in Idaho he is wanted in Washington for attempted homicide against an officer.

Sgt. Derek Dofelmire with the Shoshone County Sheriff's Office said events of the day began Thursday morning when the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Apprehension Task Force from Spokane came to Shoshone County, requesting information on several houses in the area. He said the Task Force checked houses throughout the day until it received information of a house on east Portland Road in Kellogg where Gleason might be.

The Task Force set up a perimeter around the house and attempted to draw out the inhabitants using a PA system. Dofelmire said the Task Force was eventually able to contact the homeowner, who said Gleason had left a few hours before the call.

"We luckily happened to find that vehicle driving around Kellogg," Dofelmire said. "We made contact with that driver who told us where the fugitive was at. We quickly mobilized to go assist the Marshall's Task Force to set up a perimeter around the house."

Dofelmire said there were children in the top part of the residence, who were removed before making contact with Gleason.

The Task Force knocked on the basement door of the residence to call out Gleason and his three companions.

Along with Gleason were Donald Madsen, 42, of Kellogg; Franklin Beck, 30, of Kellogg; and an unidentified female who was not charged with any crime. Madsen and Beck were arrested and are being held for failure to appear.

Dofelmire said Gleason was the last to exit the residence and was suffering from a gunshot wound to the knee. The wound allegedly occurred from his crime in Washington. A press release from the Shoshone County Sheriff's Office briefly described the crime.

"Gleason and his female companion at the time struck one of the responding officers with their vehicle. Law enforcement fired multiple shots at the vehicle and the vehicle's occupant(s) also returned gunfire at the pursuing officers."

Gleason was taken to Shoshone Medical Center where he was treated and released to Shoshone County deputies. He is currently being held in Shoshone County and will be transferred to Pierce County, Wash., as soon as possible.

Dofelmire said the female companion who committed the crime with Gleason is still at large.

Dofelmire said the Task Force may have scared members of the community, but it was all for the sake of apprehending a dangerous criminal, which he said is a fair trade. By mobilizing in the way the Task Force did, the community was kept safe, Dofelmire said.
