Get in the swing of things at the mall
The south end of Silver Lake Mall has some interesting new places.
One isn't actually a store. Scarlett's Golf Experience is just that, an experience.
The customer swings a golf club at one of about 100 golf courses which are realistically shown on a huge three-dimensional screen displayed on both sides and in front of the golfer. The golfer stands in front and swings as two cameras shoot and measure everything to calculate the flight of the shot and the ball spin.
Players can use clubs at the place or bring their own. Scores are kept automatically, and beverages are available. Coming from Southern California two years ago, owners Roger and Dale (his uncle) Scarlett developed the software for the business and also sell simulators.
Leagues will start in early November. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays. Check www.scarlettgolf.com. Phone 762-GOLF (4653).
Lost & Found next door
The new store next to Scarlett Golf is Lost & Found Antiques & Treasures.
An interesting assortment of collectibles, toys, dishes and antiques of all sorts are offered by owners Matt House and his parents John and JoAnn. A second facet of their business is called Furniture Hunters.
"We find it. We fix it. We refinish it" is their motto. "Let us help you find the perfect piece of furniture."

Blades opens in Sunset Mall
These items aren't in every store. A huge assortment of knives, spears, swords, axes, stun-guns, canes and even home-made display specialties are in the new store Blades in Sunset Mall at 276 W. Sunset Ave. (east of Highway 95).
Owner Tony Jacobs said his wife Chris will soon be adding an area called Jacobs Jewels featuring her hand-made jewelry.
"I've found these things from all over the world through the Internet," he said.
The store is open noon to 6 p.m. but closed Mondays and Thursdays.
Changes in Plaza Shops
Memory Lane Gems opened Oct. 1 in the Resort Plaza Shops downtown.
Owner Lynn Rinker offers heirloom and fine jewelry, nostalgic gift items, shabby-chic items and re-purposed furniture. She also has a store in Silver Lake Mall.
Hours downtown are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. Phone 777-5999.
Other new businesses coming soon into the Plaza Shops are Chamira and ClimbWorks.

- Other new places to watch for include The Barbershop in Sunset Mall, Animal Medical Center on Fourth Street, Physzique Fitness in Riverstone, a new Pinkerton Retirement Specialists building in Riverstone, Panhandle State Banks changing to Columbia, ArtCoLab at Front and Fourth downtown and Massage Envy in Ironwood Square.
- A label instruction on a new computer: "To avoid condensation, allow the box to warm to room temperature before opening." OK, but the label is inside the box.
- The batteries were given free of charge.
- Before cell phones, the day with the most collect calls was Father's Day.
