LACLEDE - Senior Josie Brown crossed the line first in 18 minutes, 19 seconds for the Coeur d'Alene Viking girls, who turned in the top four spots to run away with Thursday's 5A Region 1 meet at the beautiful but rain-soaked Riley Creek Campgrounds.

Coeur d'Alene finished with all seven runners inside the top 10 as they posted a near-perfect score of 16, almost 40 points ahead of second-place Lewiston.

"I told them not to go crazy with the slick conditions, but they did," Coeur d'Alene coach Cathy Compton said. "These girls ran with conviction and power, and it was nice to see the top three battle it out - in a friendly way."

Caitlin Conway took the runner-up spot with a time of 18 minutes, 21 seconds and Kara and Krista Story placed third and fourth, respectively, for Coeur d'Alene, which is looking for a three-peat when the Vikings travel to the state cross country meet next Saturday at Eagle Island State Park.

"Our goal is to three-peat and we will continue to work hard this week to make that goal," Compton said. "This is a talented, solid group and there is no reason not to three-peat."

On the boys side Lake City's Jake Finney edged out teammate Kyler Little by only two seconds after the duo led throughout the race.

Both seniors, Finney clocked a time of 15 minutes, 53 seconds to win the district title and Little ended his race with a time of 15 minutes, 55 seconds.

"Temp wise it was perfect," Finney said about the downpour during the race. "You have to slow down a bit and be cautious around some corners, but the rain feels great.

The No. 1 ranked 5A runner in the state according to IdahoXC.com, Finney said he hopes to contend for the win this year after placing fifth the past two seasons.

Jose Winton led the way with a time of 16 minutes, 36 seconds for the Coeur d' Alene boys, who failed to qualify as a team after finishing in third place and only two points behind Lewiston.

Andrew Magee and Daniel Walters finished seventh and 10th, respectively, to also qualify individually for Coeur d'Alene.

"That's our first perfect score ever, which was our goal, and the girls went out and got it done," Timberlake coach Shawn Lawler said. "We hope to be in the top three this year and should be right in that range."

Timberlake ran away with the team title, finishing 48 points ahead of runner-up and state qualifier Priest River.

It was a three-man race to the finish on the boys side, as Bonners Ferry runner Jacob Perkins narrowly edged out Brayden Menti of Bonners Ferry and Josh Marks of Priest River to pick up a district title in his senior season.

Perkins finished with a time of 17 minutes, 22 seconds and only 1.6 second separated second and third place finishers Menti and Marks.

"Hats off to Brayden," said Lawler, who added a district title. "It should come down to a battle like the way it did."
