TEACHER: That's how kids learn

| October 22, 2014 9:00 PM

Hats off and high fives to Melissa Giles, PE teacher at Skyway Elementary! Her creative use of pumpkins and kitchen scraps looked to be a great success with her students. These are the kinds of high interest activities that challenge our kids to think, create and work together. I don’t know about you, but decorating pumpkins is a whole lot more interesting way to learn about food groups than the way I was taught!

All of our teachers are being called to make changes in their teaching to support the Common Core Standards, and Melissa’s lesson is just one of many well planned and thought out standards-based activities that are happening all over our city. Thank you teachers for going the extra mile for our children. Well done! Keep up the inspiring work.
