U.S. Naval Academy Midshipmen to visit area, discuss life at academy
U.S. Naval Academy Midshipman Steven Hallgren and Midshipman Gil Givens will be in Coeur d'Alene to provide an introduction to the naval academy at Annapolis, Md.
These local high school graduates will describe the life of a midshipman, and discuss the qualifications, application and nominations process at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 24 at the Coeur d'Alene Police Department, 3818 N. Schreiber Way.
Hallgren is a graduate of Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy and Givens graduated from Post Falls High School. They both received appointments to the naval academy from North Idaho.
All interested students, but especially sophomores and juniors, as well as parents and school representatives are welcome.
A naval academy appointment is a four-year scholarship covering academic tuition, medical expenses and housing, along with a monthly paycheck.
While at the academy, students spend summer sessions learning the aspects of a career as a naval officer with introductions to the U.S. Marine Corps, naval aviation, surface ship and submarine service.
Students select from more than 25 majors and receive a Bachelor of Science degree. After graduation, midshipmen are commissioned in the U.S. Navy or Marine Corps and serve at least five years.
