STATE SWIMMING: Cd'A boys repeat as champions

| November 9, 2014 8:00 PM

BOISE - Even stronger than last year, the Coeur d'Alene Vikings swam away with their second straight boys swimming championship on Saturday at the Boise City Aquatics Center.

Coeur d'Alene senior Ethan Cordes won state titles in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly, setting a state record in the freestyle in 20.83 seconds.

"It was one of the better races of my life," said Cordes of the 50 freestyle.

Cordes also swam on winning relays in the 200 and 400 freestyle along with teammates Kade Hern, Kyle Jones and Beau Urbaniak.

"It was one of the best experiences of my life," Cordes said. "There's nobody I'd rather swim with than that group of kids. We've been swimming together since we were 10, and to set some records in our final race together, it was awesome."

Coeur d'Alene beat Boise by 37 points for the 5A boys title.

Team championships were separated into three classifications. Moscow won the 4A title and Soda Springs the three-team 3A title.

"We pretty much dominated all the other teams," Coeur d'Alene coach Rich Swoboda said. "We kind of swam for positioning on Friday night (in the prelims), and just improved on those times today."

Coeur d'Alene junior Nicole Rozier claimed a state title in the 200 individual medley in 2:03.08, four seconds faster than the previous record.

"It was probably the swim of the meet," Swoboda said. "She had a strategy to take it to her (Wood River's Maddie Johnson, who was the next lane over). She's (Johnson) is not used to being behind. We expected Nicole to get tired and die off (because she started so fast), but she kept going faster."

The reason, according to Rozier was simple - motivation.

"I really didn't want her to beat me," said Rozier, who led the Viking girls to a fifth-place finish. "I knew I could get ahead, so I was sprinting the entire time because I really wanted to win."

At first, Rozier couldn't believe she set a state record by that much.

"When I talked to my coach, I thought they (the timers) had made a mistake," Rozier said. "I thought they messed it up. I didn't know that I'd beat it by that much."

Boise won the 5A girls title, with Wood River taking the 4A and Logos of Moscow the 3A title.

Hannah Gonzalez finished third in the 200 freestyle for Lake City, which finished fourth. Maggie deTar was second in the 500 freestyle for Post Falls, which finished sixth.

Sandpoint's Payton Bokowy won the 50 and 100 freestyle, helping the Bulldog girls finish second in 4A.
