Doris Ouren, 95

| November 9, 2014 8:00 PM

Doris I. (Gjesvold) Ouren, 95, of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, passed away Nov. 6, 2014.

Doris was born Feb. 3, 1919, in Nome, N.D., to William and Stella Gjesvold, the second of four children. She grew up and graduated from Wildrose High School in Wildrose, N.D.

Doris married Harry Ouren on March 26, 1941, in Wolf Point, Mont. In 1942 they moved to Seattle, Wash., where both Harry and Doris worked in the shipyards during the W.W. II years. They moved back to Wildrose in 1945 and purchased a restaurant/movie theater, which they owned until 1948. It was a thriving business until the state decided that you could not combine a movie theater and a restaurant.

In 1952 they moved to Tioga, N.D., where oil was discovered and Harry worked as foreman for an oil field construction company. Doris worked for Heinle Pharmacy for a number of years during this time. In 1968 they moved to Seattle where she was employed by her sister, Lavern, in a card and gift ship in downtown Seattle.

They retired in 1978 and moved to Coeur d'Alene, where Doris was very active with the Lutheran Church and various nonprofit organizations. After Harry passed away in 1991, she moved into Heritage Place and spent 20 wonderful years as a resident there.

Doris did some traveling to see her daughter Sandy in Houston, and took one great trip with them to New York to see her granddaughter Suzanne graduate from West Point Military Academy. She loved to cook and was a great baker in her day and, as always, Thanksgiving and Christmas were very special holidays. She also sang Christian songs on the radio in Williston, N.D., for a number of years.

Doris really enjoyed her family and all the friends she made over the years, and was a devoted Christian.

She was preceded in death by her husband Harry; her parents; her brother Gordy; brother and sister-in-law Wallace and Esther; nephew Bruce; sister and brother-in-law Lavern and Clinton Hill.

Doris is survived by her daughter, Sandy Hauf (Chuck) of Houston, Texas; her son Ron Ouren (Karen) of Coeur d'Alene; nephew Blair Gjesvold (Cheryl) of Montana; five grandchildren: Tawnie Rouleau (Roger) of Liberty Lake, Wash., Tom Ouren (Taryn) of Coeur d'Alene, Tami Ouren of Bismarck, N.D., John Hauf (Nadine) of Allen, Texas, Suzanne Conroy (COL. Franz) of Bel Air, Md.; 11 great-grandchildren: Jase Rouleau of Seattle, Chantal Rouleau of Liberty Lake; Shea Sims of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Shelby Sims of Glendale, Ariz.; Tatum and Taryn Ouren of Coeur d'Alene; Payton, Luke and Blake Hauf of Allen, Texas; and Sean and Brett Conway of Bel Air, Md.

Doris was a woman of beauty, strength, courage, compassion and love. We know there will be many wonderful arms waiting for her when she reaches heaven. The family would like to extend our sincere thanks to Hospice of North Idaho, Rose Terrace Cottage, Lacrosse, Kootenai Health and all the wonderful medical doctors and personnel that provided service to her over the years.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d'Alene. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 12, at Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d'Alene Chapel, with burial to follow at Riverview Cemetery, Coeur d'Alene.
