Lookout program Friday at Cd'A library

| May 29, 2014 9:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE - History and archaeology come to the Coeur d'Alene on Friday with the Spyglass Ground House Restoration Partnership.

To mark Idaho Archeology and Historic Preservation Month, the Coeur d'Alene Public Library will host Bruce Gibson, zone archaeologist for the St. Joe Ranger District, for a 6:30 p.m. lecture and slideshow in the Community Room.

Gibson said the multi-year restoration project at the Spyglass Lookout site on the Coeur d'Alene River Ranger District is a joint effort of the Idaho Panhandle National Forest, Lutherhaven Ministries and the Forest Fire Lookout Association.

The purpose of the project is the bring the National Register-eligible ground house (built in the 1930s) and the 1950s-era lookout tower back to their 1950s condition. There are few ground houses of this style left in the region.

This presentation is sponsored by the Idaho Historical Society and is one of numerous programs to be offered at site throughout the state during May. Information: www.history.idaho.gov.
