• Buy Memorial Day lunch for a veteran

Donations are now being collected for the sixth annual Vernon Baker Memorial Day Lunch for Veterans set to take place May 26.

Only active duty and prior military service members, regardless of protected veteran status, are eligible to eat for free, with proof of military service required. Last year 210 veterans received a free meal.

Monetary donations collected will be given to participating restaurants to help defray the costs.

Tax-deductible donations can be made out to VFW Post 889 with "Veterans Lunch" in the memo and mailed to event organizers at Memorial Day Lunch, c/o Patti Leach, 8257 Raspberry Lane, Hayden, ID 83835.

The following restaurants have volunteered to open their doors on Memorial Day to offer a free meal to veterans:

Capone's Pub & Grill locations in Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls and Hayden, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Michael D's Eatery from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Fedora Pub & Grille from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

• Rathdrum spring cleanup activities planned

RATHDRUM - It's time for spring cleaning in Rathdrum, and you can do your part to help out.

On Saturday, from 10 a.m. to noon, there will be a cleanup of Pinegrove Cemetery. If you're interested in volunteering, call 687-2399.

Other activities are planned Monday through May 18.

Disabled or elderly residents can have their trash or yard waste picked up at the curb. Call 687-2700, ext. 127, to be put on the list.

Volunteers are needed to pick up trash along Boekel Road and Highway 41 on May 17. Those interested should come to the city shop at 7310 W. Boekel Road at 8 a.m.

A dumpster will be available at the city shop from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through May 18 for city residents to haul their own trash. Folks should bring a water bill for proof of residency.

Items accepted include wood products, leaves, branches, old furniture and appliances.

Items not accepted include dirt, commercial trash, roofing materials, hazardous materials, tires, TVs, computer monitors and batteries.
