SPIRIT LAKE - Timberlake freshman pitcher Shelby Salois stepped up when the Tigers needed her the most, allowing just one run on five hits in a 5-1 complete-game victory over the Priest River Spartans in the 3A District 1 tournament championship game to advance to the state 3A tournament next week in Nampa.

"Shelby was great," Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. "For a freshman to come into a district championship game and throw the way she did was fantastic."

Salois escaped a few jams with runners on base.

"She did a great job of throwing strikes and letting her defense work behind her," Menti said. "She had great command."

Justina Kalar was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and stole four bases and Katie Malloy went 2 for 3 with a run batted in and a run scored for Timberlake (12-9), which faces the winner of a play-in game between the runner-up from District 5 and 6 to open the state tournament next Friday at the West Park Softball Complex.

Priest River will face Bonners Ferry, which beat Kellogg 11-10 in a loser-out game, tonight in the second-place game at 5 p.m. at Timberlake.

A three-run bottom of the fourth inning was the key for Timberlake. Brittany Krampert allowed two earned runs for the Spartans.

"Justina Kalar had a fantastic day," Menti said. "We were the league champs and we only had two players on the all-tournament team. So to say we played with a little bit of a chip on our shoulder, we were ready to go. Justina deserved to be on that team."
