Matheson seeks county treasurer post

COEUR d'ALENE - Steven D. Matheson is running for Kootenai County treasurer in the Republican primary in May.

He said the safety and soundness of the county's treasury is critical for the future health and prosperity of the community. He wants to make sure the county's investments have adequate controls and are well managed to maximize returns.

Matheson, a five-year resident of the county, said he has 28 years of financial management experience. He is managing principal of Steven Douglas LLC, a municipal adviser in Coeur d'Alene.

He is a graduate of Central Washington University with a double major in accounting and finance. He is also a certified public accountant.

Matheson said it is time to evaluate the county's economic health and set a new standard in its financial capabilities.

"I am not interested in being another candidate simply seeking the security of a government job," he said. "Instead, I am seeking the treasurer office because I want better government. I have ideas and plans for improving the office and will not be bashful promoting and defending them."

His previous work includes executive directorship at JPMorgan's global derivatives products group and managing director of Bank One, where he developed the bank's risk management department for all treasury, asset-liability management, and investment portfolio and derivatives activities.

Matheson is married, and has three children. They live in the county.
