PICKLE: Player has different view

| June 27, 2014 9:00 PM

I am responding to the letter submitted by Marilyn Cali about the pickleball incident.

I was one of the two sitting at the courts that morning that said we were not using the second court. At that point there were six pickleball players, four playing and two waiting to rotate in.

Approximately 20 minutes later, there were 16 pickleball players, four playing on one court since one was being used by the tennis players, and 12 waiting to rotate in.

Yes, there were words from both pickleball players as well as tennis players. I eventually went over to calm things down, stating that we have 16 pickleball players and the tennis players were four. I said that not one sport dominates the courts, and that we must rotate each sport on both courts. I said that the pickleball players play one game to 11 and rotate. I asked if they could play a game the best of three or even a set, then rotate out, and rotate back in when their turn came up. Somehow, they thought they were entitled to 1 1/2 hours on that court no matter what the score.

In this city there are 50+ outdoor tennis courts, and two pickleball courts that are marked for both sports. Everyone in the past few weeks has rotated in and out. These women weren’t going to do that. I have the video of that morning, and it will be submitted to Parks and Rec.
