Rabbit, guinea pig adoption continues today at fairgrounds

| June 16, 2014 9:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE - Another chance for anyone wanting to adopt a rabbit or guinea pig is today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds.

The animals will be located in the Draft Horse Building at the fairgrounds. Adoptions are free. Interested parties must register with the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office, which will have personnel on site, and must take the animal from the premises at the time of adoption.

Almost 100 guinea pigs and rabbits were brought back to the fairgrounds by the sheriff's office in hopes of getting them adopted by community members. However, only half were adopted last Saturday.

The fairgrounds housed 139 of these animals at the beginning of the year after they were seized from a residence in Athol. The fairgrounds staff and volunteers, along with the sheriff's office, have been taking care of the animals for the past five months.

Folks interested in adopting the animals are asked to enter the fairgrounds off Kathleen Avenue through Gate D and follow the signs through the grass field to Building 15. Carriers are available for a small fee or adopting parties can bring their own.
