• Man struck by vehicle shows improvement

RATHDRUM - The 68-year-old Rathdrum man struck by a vehicle in Rathdrum Wednesday morning improved Thursday to fair condition at Kootenai Health.

James K. Valentine had been in critical condition Wednesday afternoon.

Joyce A. Valentine, 66, was also injured during the accident and was treated and released from the hospital.

According to Idaho State Police, Ashley J. Janssen, 21, Rathdrum, was turning westbound in a 2006 Ford F150 truck onto Highway 53 from Westwood Drive in front of Super 1 Foods when she struck the pedestrians in the crosswalk.

The accident occurred around 6:40 a.m.

An investigation continues.

• Driver's License office closed Tuesday

The Driver's License section of the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office will be closed Tuesday for mandatory training. The office will reopen Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. for normal business.

• Teachers to converge on Cd'A for STEM institute

Nearly 700 Idaho educators are slated to learn about science, technology, engineering and math-based topics and how to use the information in their classrooms during six workshops slated to be held around the state this month.

A Coeur d'Alene workshop will take place Monday through Friday at North Idaho College.

The workshops are organized by the Idaho STEM initiative, a partnership of educators, government agencies, organizations and private companies working to improve STEM education in the state. I-STEM members include Idaho National Laboratory, universities and community colleges, the state Department of Education, Idaho State Board of Education, Hewlett Packard, Intermountain Gas, Micron and Idaho Power.

This is the fifth year I-STEM has sponsored the K-12 teacher professional development summer institutes. Since 2010, the number of workshops has expanded from two to six and hundreds of educators and administrators have participated.
