Rainfall sets record

| June 4, 2014 9:00 PM

While no cats or dogs fell from the sky, plenty of rain came down in parts of Coeur d'Alene and elsewhere Tuesday afternoon.

A line of thunderstorms passed through between 4:15 and 5 p.m., drenching an area from Interstate 90 in northwest Coeur d'Alene to Rathdrum with an inch or more of rain, Climatologist Cliff Harris said.

"We received 1.08 inches of rain on Player Drive (in Coeur d'Alene) in less than an hour," Harris said. "It's one of the biggest storms I've seen in my 25 years in Coeur d'Alene."

When rainfall from Monday night's thunderstorm is included with Tuesday's downpour, a total of 1.49 inches fell in Coeur d'Alene - more than May's entire monthly rainfall of 1.31 inches.

The previous record rainfall on June 3 was 0.95 inches in 1936, Harris noted. The month of June averages 1.93 inches of rain.

Flash flooding and marble-sized hail also were reported in the Ramsey Road/Kathleen Avenue area during Tuesday's storm.
