CORE: Might save education

| July 23, 2014 9:00 PM

Finally, a “Common Core” of standards for a broken public education system.

The fact that public education has refused to improve over decades brought on No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Kids’ futures have been destroyed by the millions as teachers and their unions stiff-armed the desperate calls to improve — to include NCLB. Citizens have kept their district and school board jobs by approving nothing that would have added additional accountability to teaching jobs. The nation has been kept — at risk!

The concept of a Common Core of education expectations was therefore created by our 50 governors. A committee was tasked to create the concept. Of course “educators” would take exception to who comprised “the committee,” or, God forbid, that the Federal Government be involved. Left to their own devices, our newspaper, politicians, and teachers and their unions, would have, could have, fought forever in places like Coeur d’Alene over just how we can fix a broken public education system. Now, the task of improvement has been taken out of their hands. Adults and “leaders” have intervened!

Too bad our school board, elected state officials, and the Coeur d’Alene Press, were not the catalyst to improve our schools. Effectively, reform of public education is going to take place in spite of them. Thank goodness for Common Core. Let’s just hope that “Idaho” Common Core isn’t a ruse designed to create a less stringent standard for Idaho kids.
