MILESTONE BIRTHDAY

Violet L. Potratz

100th Birthday

The family wishes to announce the 100th birthday of Violet L. Potratz, born July 18, 1914, to parents George and Edna Urquhart who lived and homesteaded in Pierre, S.D. She is third born of 12 children. Violet attended the country school until eighth grade. She survived a rattlesnake bite on the chin as a child with the help of her mother.

She met and married Walter W. Potratz when she was 17 in January 1932, and they were married until his death In 1994. They stayed in South Dakota where Walter was a commercial fisherman. There they had three children, Kurt, Joann and Gary (Kurt and Joann now deceased), who all gave her many grandchildren. The family relocated to Three Forks at Hauser Lake in 1939 where Walter became a lumberjack to which Violet had to help him with some of that and keeping his books in order.

Those early years were hard for Violet in the mountains where they lived off the land. They went to town for very little. No electricity, food was grown in a garden, she baked her own bread, chickens raised for eggs, meat was hunted or fished, all which had to be preserved by canning or storing in a root cellar and wood had to be cut and stored before the harsh winter snows came. Cooking was done on a wood cook stove that also heated the house. She had to be constantly on watch for critters in her garden which was terraced and fenced but they got in anyway and she once chased a visiting bear away from the chicken coop with nothing but anger and a rake.

Walter and Violet moved into Coeur d'Alene to live the city life in 1969. It was a nice adjustment where she still gardened, but it took some doing getting used to the city crowd. Violet had an odd hobby, she was an avid weather watcher who monitored and recorded on calendars daily high and lows and rain and snowfall levels for six decades. All of which started in South Dakota when she remembers her father waking her and her siblings in the dead of night to rush them to the root cellar which was dug for not only storage but safety as well during bad windstorms.

Violet has resided at Heritage Place since 2000 where she drove her car until 91 years of age, which she had to give up due to bad eyesight. She looks forward to her daily gabfest in the afternoons with a few resident friends in the lobby area talking about family and reminiscing the old days and ways of a 100 years.
