Bayley advances to final eight

of Pacific Northwest Amateur

Recent Lakeland High graduate Derek Bayley advanced to the final eight of the 113th Pacific Northwest men's Amateur Championship after winning a pair of matches on Wednesday afternoon at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman.

In the round of 32, Bayley, who signed with Washington State, defeated Clay Christensen of Wilder 3 and 2.

Bayley then defeated Tye Gabriel of Portland 5 and 4 to advance.

Bayley will face Christopher Match of Mukilteo, Wash., today in the quarterfinal round at 7:30 a.m., with semifinal matches starting at noon.

The final match will be contested over 36 holes on Friday.

Pouttu advances

in women's amateur

Kaceelyn Pouttu, a Kellogg High graduate and current Weber State golfer, won a pair of matches to advance to the quarterfinals of the Pacific Northwest women's Amateur Championship at Lewiston Golf and Country Club.

Pouttu defeated Paige Whidbee of Pullman 5 and 4 and then Brooke Branigan of Bellingham, Wash., 2 and 1 to advance to the quarterfinal round.

Pouttu will face tournament top-seed Aaren Ziegler of Canby, Ore., today in the quarterfinals at 7:30 a.m.

Amy Hasenoehrl of Lewiston beat current Whitworth and Lakeland High graduate Chelsea Bayley 6 and 5.

Molnar joins Vandals staff

as wide receivers coach

Veteran coach Charley Molnar has joined Paul Petrino's staff at Idaho as the Vandals' wide receivers coach.

Molnar was the head coach at Massachusetts in 2012 and 2013 and has been an assistant at Notre Dame (2010-11), Cincinnati (2007-09) and Central Michigan (2006), as well as Indiana State (2005), Western Michigan (2003-04), Eastern Michigan (2002), Eastern Illinois (2001), Kent State (1994-2000), Illinois State (1990-93), Western Carolina (1989) and Virginia (1987-88). His coaching career began in 1984 at his alma mater, Lock Haven.

"Getting Charley to join our staff was a home run for us," Petrino said. "He has been one of the best offensive minds in college football. He is a great teacher of technique and details of his position."

He has helped lead teams to seven bowl games, which includes Cincinnati's top-five ranking and Sugar Bowl appearance in the 2009 season.

Women's regional coming

to Spokane in 2015

Washington State and the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena have been selected to host one of four regional sites for the 2015 NCAA Division I women's basketball championship.

This marks the fourth time in an eight-year span the Cougars will have hosted a women's regional, including 2008, 2011 and 2013.

The Spokane Regional will be played either March 27 and March 29, or March 28 and March 30. The NCAA will determine those dates later this year.

Ticket prices and sale dates for the regional will be announced at a later date.
