Talking about education

| January 23, 2014 8:00 PM

The Coeur d'Alene Education Partnership will present a State of the District community event in partnership with the Coeur d'Alene School District from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29 in the Community Room of the Coeur d'Alene Public Library.

Parents, teachers, students, and community members are invited to attend. The library is located at 702 E. Front St.

Topics to be discussed include a district performance report from Superintendent Matt Handelman, an update on the district's new safety and security enhancements, information about the Idaho Core Standards and the Smarter Balanced Field Test, and a presentation about the district's strategic planning project, titled "Our Schools, Our Future."

"We are always eager to let the community know what we are up to and why," Handelman said. "We appreciate the CEP for inviting us to another venue in which we can share and answer questions that the public may have about our work."

Each topic will be presented by district representatives and will be followed by a question and answer session moderated by the Coeur d'Alene Education Partnership.

Handelman will give an overview of the district, present district achievement data, and provide updates on facilities. Wendell Wardell, chief operating officer, and Laura Rumpler, director of communications, will provide information on the district's new security and safety enhancements. Mike Nelson, the district's director of curriculum and assessments, and Shanna Marshall, a fourth-grade teacher for Sorensen Magnet School for the Arts and Humanities, will present information about the Idaho Core Standards and the Smarter Balanced Field Test.

The final presentation will be by Handelman on the district's new strategic plan and his leadership philosophy.

The event will be recorded and will air on CDATV Channel 19 throughout the month of February.
