SPOKANE — Valley Christian hit its first five shots — all 3-pointers — and burst out to a 20-4 lead after four minutes before a defensive switch helped the visiting Panthers turn things around.

“It was unbelievable,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Doug Grant said of that early flurry.

The Panthers switched from a man-to-man defense to a 1-3-1 zone, and held the hosts to 11 points over the final 28 minutes.

“The 1-3-1, it took the skip (pass) away,” Grant said. “They were pinning and skipping, and the 1-3-1 put those wings out too far for them to pin us.”

Valley Christian did not make another 3 after that. They still tried the skip pass, but Abby Bartlett came up with eight steals against it.

Freshman Mae Alexander scored 16 points for Charter (8-11), giving her 36 points in two nights on 15-of-22 shooting.

Bradi Harding hit three first-quarter 3s and led Valley Christian with 12 points.
