DOGS: Oppose BSL movements

| February 7, 2014 8:00 PM

This letter is in regard to the letter from Jim Mathey on Jan. 21. First, I’d like to say I’m very sorry for what happened to the other letter carrier being attacked. My prayers go out to her. Now on to the reason I’m writing this letter. Mr. Mathey is calling for a BSL (breed-specific legislation) on pit bulls. While I do not own a pit bull, I have had dogs considered dangerous, and also have been on the BSL list. My Rottweiler Bear was the biggest (135 pounds) sweetheart you’d ever meet.

BSL is a terrible disgrace. You don’t understand what he’s asking unless you do your own research. Please go to STOPBSL.ORG and make an informed decision. The cost of this kind of measure is overwhelming expensive financially and emotionally. Trying to “determine” if a dog is a pit bull is not easy. So, that means ANYTHING that resembles one is thrown in the mix too. The cost of a DNA test is too expensive, so they lump all look-alike dogs together. Since they wouldn’t be allowed in the city, they are now unadoptable and are killed. Please call our local Humane Society and they will tell you they have lots of great pits and pit mixes.

Do not let this happen locally please! Too, too many dog’s lives are at stake. Any dog can be vicious and bite. Just ask my aunt who was made to get rid of her little Lhasa Apso from the independent living apartments she lives in. He bit someone twice, and she was forced to give him to my daughter to save his life. So much for it being mostly pits, huh?
