Tips sought in moose poaching case

| December 16, 2014 8:30 AM

SANDPOINT - The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking the public's help in finding the culprit behind a moose poaching incident.

Conservation officers located the carcass of a dead bull moose near the Middle Fork East River Road northwest of Sandpoint. The animal was shot and left to waste.

The carcass was discovered on Dec. 3, although officers believe the moose was likely poached during the last week of November.

The illegal take of a moose carries a minimum fine of $500 and leads to the filing of a felony criminal charges in some instances.

Poaching wastes Idaho's game animals, threatens species populations and deprives taxpayers of revenues generated by hunting and fishing. Poaching also denies law-abiding anglers, hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts the opportunity to enjoy healthy, mature wildlife.

Those with information about the poaching incident are asked to call Fish and Game in Coeur d'Alene at (208) 769-1414. Information can also be reported anonymously by calling the Citizens Against Poaching hotline at (800) 632-5999.
