Free scam, fraud course offered to local businesses, organizations

| December 10, 2014 8:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE - The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office is offering a free course to local businesses and organizations in order to provide tools to combat an ever-increasing number of scam and fraud attempts.

During the hour-long course, a member of the sheriff's office will brief attendees on current frauds and scams and give advice on how to prevent falling victim to them.

According to a press release, since senior citizens are most frequently targeted, they are the target audience for the course, but anyone is welcome to attend.

Handouts will be provided during each presentation and topics covered include telephone scams, mail scams and thefts and Internet scams.

In addition to the presentations, the sheriff's office is also offering free posters to local businesses and organizations. These posters showcase some of the most commonly attempted scams.

Those interested in either a poster or having a sheriff's office presentation are encouraged to contact Community Service Officer Gary Shults at (208) 446-2121 or by email at gshults@kcgov.us.
