Joyce Anne 'Joy' Shuman, 67

| August 13, 2014 9:00 PM

Joyce Anne 'Joy' Shuman, 67, of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, went to be with the Lord on Aug. 7, 2014.

Joyce, known as Joy, was born Oct. 10, 1946, in Watseka, Ill., to Ernest and Esther Turcotte. She grew up all over the U.S. and graduated in 1964 from Orange High School in California. Joy joined the Navy in 1965 and was a Naval Personnel Administrator during the Vietnam War. She was very patriotic and took great pride in being an American.

Joy met the love of her life and future husband, Harold, in 1963; however, when she joined the Navy they lost touch and Joy ended up marrying and having three sons with Tony Horn. Her son, Terry, was born with Hydrocephalus and lived to be 18 years old. Joy's second son, Monday Stevens, sadly passed away from SIDS on Christmas day, his first birthday. Joy's youngest son, Shannon, lives in Post Falls, Idaho, with his wife and two children. Shannon was the light of her life, and Joy's eyes always lit up when he was around or she talked about him.

In 1978, after her divorce, Joy reunited with Harold. They married on July 4, 1980, and resided in Littlerock, Calif., until 1996. They then moved to Cedar City, Utah, for about six years. In 2002, they decided they wanted to spend more time with family and watch their grandchildren grow up so Joy and Harold moved to Coeur d'Alene.

Following her time in the Navy, Joy worked at Edwards Air Force Base as an accountant. In October 1991, Joy was in a horrific car accident. She was in a coma for several months, and in the hospital for more than two years. The accident left half of her body paralyzed and she was confined to a wheelchair for the rest of her life. Joy's devoted husband, Harold, took amazing care of her. For the last 23 years he has been at her side and had dedicated his life to caring for her. Because of that, Joy was able to live a great life and was able to enjoy so much. She loved to fish and camp, and was still able to do that up until 2012 when her health really started to falter.

Joy was a huge sports fan and watched football, baseball and basketball religiously. She especially loved watching her son and grandchildren participate in sports. Before the accident Joy never missed any of Shannon's events, and as soon as she was able Joy attended as many track meets, baseball/softball games, triathlons and any other events her son and grandchildren were involved in. She was their biggest fan and always had a huge smile for them afterward.

Joy was preceded in death by two sons, Terry and Monday Stevens. She is survived by her loving husband, Harold Shuman; son and daughter-in-law Shannon and Laura Horn, and their children, Camren and Kelsey; stepson Harold Shuman Jr., and his children, Michael and Jeremy; grandson Jack; brother and sister-in-law Roger and Jean Turcotte; brother-in-law Bob Shuman (Sheryl) and their family; and an abundance of friends who Joy considered family and a very big part of her life.

Joy will forever be remembered for her smile and her strength. She fought up until the end and showed us all that you should never give up.

A memorial service is set for 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014, at English Funeral Home, 1700 N. Spokane St., Post Falls. Please visit Joy's online memorial at www.englishfuneralchapel.com.
