PARKING: You don't own that spot

| April 18, 2014 9:00 PM

On April 14th I attended the District No. 271 School Board meeting, parking my car on N. Fifth St. since the meeting was very crowded and parking was tight. When I came out, I found the following hand-printed note on my windshield:

“Don’t park in my parking spot! You people have two entire parking lots to use. The parking in front of my house is for my cars, friends, or family. Thanks.”

According to our city ordinances, the public city streets are for all unless there is an authorized residential parking permit area such as in the Ft. Grounds. You do not “own” the parking in front of your house; your rights end at your property line.

I understand that many of us use the street in front of our homes for overflow parking when we have friends and family visit, and you have every right to use it if it is free.

However, as a fellow citizen, I have the same right if I am attending a function in your neighborhood. In the future, however, I will make every effort to park in one of the parking lots provided.
