Sutton paces Vikings past Trojans

POST FALLS - Sean Sutton went 3 for 4 with four RBIs and three runs scored as the Coeur d'Alene Vikings defeated the Post Falls Trojans 8-2 in a 5A Inland Empire League game on Tuesday afternoon.

Sutton hit a two-run double to score Gibson Green and Nick Nyquist to give Coeur d'Alene (10-4, 3-1 5A IEL) a 4-0 lead in the third inning.

Drake Bowers scored on an error in the fourth inning for Post Falls (8-5, 0-3) to cut the deficit to 5-1. Ameen Gondo had an RBI single to score Bowers in the seventh.

"It was a fun game," Post Falls coach Dustin Frank said. "It's always nice to play competitive teams and just a good test to see where we're at, and what we need to work on. It was a fun game to be a part of. I'm looking forward to tomorrow and hope the outcome will be a little different."

The teams play again today in Post Falls starting at 4 p.m.

COEUR d'ALENE - Dalton Strong's go-ahead two-run triple in the top of the fifth inning keyed the Hawks' nonleague win over the Timberwolves.

Strong's huge hit to right field scored Blake Wrotenbery and Logan Bruner for a 5-4 lead, in a three-run fifth inning by Lakeland (7-6). A passed ball scored Strong for an insurance run and a 6-4 lead.

Jordan Ross and Cody Garza each had two hits for the Timberwolves (8-5), who scored three runs in the first inning, and led 4-0 after two.

"I thought we came out pretty hot in the first inning," Lake City coach Travis Georgius said. "It seemed like we cooled down and their pitcher did a good job of settling in. He kept them in the game and they had a couple of big innings."

Both teams play a doubleheader on Saturday. Lake City plays at Coeur d'Alene, with the first game set for 10 a.m.

Lakeland plays at Moscow, starting at noon.

SPIRIT LAKE - Hunter Tonkin pitched five shutout innings in Timberlake's Intermountain League rout of Priest River, played in intermittent rain.

Tonkin struck out eight and walked two for Timberlake (6-3, 3-0 IML). Tonkin and catcher Austin Allen each had three hits with two runs batted in.

"It was a good day," Timberlake coach Bill Rider said. "We put the ball in play. We played well. Once we got through the wetness, we were all right."

Priest River is 3-5, 1-2.

Timberlake plays at home Friday against Sandpoint.

BONNERS FERRY - Jesse Dunham struck out five in the final three innings of relief for the Badgers, which defeated the Wildcats in an Intermountain League game.

Bonners Ferry (6-5, 2-1 IML) trailed 7-1 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, but scored eight runs, keyed by a two-run single by Matt Gray as the Badgers scored eight runs.

"We really struggled getting the bat on the ball," Bonners Ferry coach Tom Turpin said. "But really got it going in the fifth inning. Dunham came in and really shut them down."

Brandon Stott had a two-run double in the first inning for Kellogg-Wallace (1-6, 0-3), which hosts Priest River on Saturday at Teeters Field in Kellogg.

Bonners Ferry hosts Timberlake on Saturday.

SPIRIT LAKE - Shelby Salois struck out six and went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored, leading the Tigers past the visiting Spartans in an Intermountain League game.

Ashley Carhart went 3 for 3 with three RBIs for Timberlake (5-5, 3-0 IML), which travels to Sandpoint on Friday.

"We just did a good job of hitting today with 13 hits," Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. "When we got runners on, we got them in. All of our hits were clutch hits."

Priest River (5-3, 2-1) travels to Kellogg on Saturday for a doubleheader.

St. Maries won the team title with 179, followed by host Wallace in second with 189.

Makenna Balbi of St. Maries won girls medalist honors with a 51.

COEUR d’ALENE — Hailey Little of Lake City beat Caitlin McHugh in straight sets and Mitch Williams also won in straight sets as the Timberwolves beat the Vikings.

“For Hailey to beat Caitlin, who is the best player in the league, it was a nice win for Hailey,” Lake City girls coach Roger Keilig said. “Mitch has been on a nice roll in the last three matches and really continuing to be consistent over that time.”

Boys matches were held at Coeur d’Alene High, with girls and mixed doubles at Lake City.

On Thursday, Lake City travels to Moscow and Coeur d’Alene hosts Post Falls.
