SCHOOLS: Add the words - now

| April 6, 2014 9:00 PM

In regard to the “hidden movement afoot” in our community, I’d like to clarify one point: It’s not hidden.

I and other supporters of the proposed changes to the Coeur d’Alene School District’s anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policies are clear and open about what we want; we want every child, parent, staff member and administrator in our district to be confident they are protected from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, not as a matter of practice but as a matter of policy.

The Coeur d’Alene School District has made impressive strides in raising awareness and addressing the problem of bullying in our schools, but our district’s policy manual is a step behind. Until we remedy this matter of policy, we cannot say we have done all we can to protect our students.

It is, without doubt, time for our district to add the words.
