Shorthanded Lakeland boys happy after tying Lake City

| September 27, 2013 9:00 PM

RATHDRUM — There may or may not be moral victories in soccer, but sometimes there are moral ties.

The 4A Lakeland Hawks tied the visiting 5A Lake City Timberwolves 1-1 in nonleague play at Rotary Field.

“It was a good game, we’re happy about it,” Hawks coach Andrew Craig said. “It’s tough going against a 5A school, they’re really well-coached. Hopefully coming up with a tie this season will swing the momentum our way the rest of this season.”

Two minutes into the second half, Collin Millette scored on an assist by Jett Paz for Lakeland (3-9-1).

Kenny Randall opened the scoring for the Timberwolves (5-1-2) in the 18th minute.

Lakeland starting goalkeeper Cade Coffey sat out with what Craig called “disciplinary issues.” Freshman midfielder/forward Austin Garitone sat out with a hip injury.

Craig said Garitone will sit out in Lakeland’s next match Tuesday at home against Post Falls, but should be able to return next Thursday at Sandpoint.

Lakeland’s Daniel McDevitt stepped in for Coffey and had three saves.

“Our bench stepped up and really played well,” Craig said.

COEUR d’ALENE — An own goal in the 60th minute cost Coeur d’Alene in a nonleague defeat against Sandpoint.

The goal gave the Bulldogs (5-3-2) a 2-0 lead.

“That one hurt us, but we struggled a lot today,” Vikings coach Andy Vredenberg said. “It’s a grueling schedule, we have three games per week. The teams that are meant to be prepared (for that) are going to do well. My hat’s off to Sandpoint.”

Gillian Sanchez scored to the far post for Coeur d’Alene (1-7-1) from six yards out. The assist was made by Cori Haney on a corner kick. It was the Vikings’ first goal after being shut out in five straight games.
