Items and activities to help enjoy our great outdoors is the objective of Vertical Earth. Well, they like to make money too!

The store is moving this Friday from Riverstone to 1323 E. Sherman Ave. Setting up shop in 4,600 square feet, Vertical Earth is a full-service cycling and outdoor sports store with all types of bikes, cruisers, wetsuits, skis, snowshoes, clothes, accessories and services for these items.

The store started downtown several years ago, moved to Riverstone and is now going into the old Rathskellers building (a tavern and grill many years ago - a favorite place we Montanans liked to go when the Idaho drinking age was 18).

Owner Mike Gaertner has four employees. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Phone 667-5503. Check www.verticalearth.com.

Public transit plans continue

Kootenai County is working with the Coeur d'Alene Tribe on acquisition of one parcel totaling about 2.3 acres in Riverstone for the transit facility.

Christine Fueston, Federal Transit Administration (FTA) grant administrator for the county, said the future project phasing, including property acquisition, will bring the transit center site to four acres. If the land is acquired as anticipated, the first phase of the facility would take shape next spring.

The site is situated where the current temporary Citylink transit hub is located on the west end of Riverstone. Funding for Phase 1 would come from two FTA grants, $1.1 million through the Tribe and about $570,000 administered through the county, Fueston said.

The transit center will be built in three phases. The first will include a park-and-ride area with 160 paved parking spots, curbing and landscaping; the second will be a transit island for buses to align, and the third a 6,300-square-foot building with bathrooms, a passenger seating area, a substation for law enforcement and office for transit dispatching.

- A warning on a Swedish chainsaw: "Do not attempt to stop chain with your hands or genitals." Oh...

- Mark your calendar for 9 a.m. Saturday to help with the annual litter pickup on Tubbs Hill. By-the-Lake Bakery will provide coffee. The friskier people should try to get to tough-to-get places on the shore.
