ELECTION: All things unequal

| September 22, 2013 9:00 PM

Mayoral candidate Steve Widmyer, when asked about the LGBT ordinance, said he approved and added the usual feel-good cliche that all men are created equal. But Mr. Widmyer forgets the fact that the writers of the Declaration of Independence were slave owners. This meant that they either did not believe entirely what they were writing or that slaves were not to be considered men.

Or maybe they meant that all men are created equal in the eyes of God, which infers they knew the mind of God. Possibly they meant that all men should be treated equally under the law, a fine notion, but not true then and not true now. Those with more money and more connections experience more justice than those without. Probably what the framers meant to say is that God did not create any man with a divine birthright to be king or queen over any other man.

In any case the reality is that nothing in the whole wide universe is equal and is not supposed to be. Equality is an enemy of individuality, which is absolutely essential for human development and evolution. Equality is merely a canard of the mass manipulators who sow discord to reap power. Mr. Widmyer, while gaining points with the P.C. crowd, has endorsed an equal rights ordinance which inadvertently (or maybe not) makes some people more equal than others.
