| September 20, 2013 9:00 PM

The Coeur d'Alene Symphony will present its first concert of the season Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m., and Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. at the Salvation Army Kroc Center, 1765 W. Golf Course Road, Coeur d'Alene.

Performance selections include Leonard Bernstein's "Overture to Candide," Tchaikovsky's "Italian Capriccio," and Borodin's "Polovetsian Dances."

The grand finale will be Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition."

"This is Mussorgsky's most imaginative and frequently performed piece, best known through the orchestral arrangement by Maurice Ravel," according to a press release. "It is based on a walk through an art gallery, with different movements depicting the various pieces of artwork, including an Old Castle, the Hut of Baba Yaga and the Great Gate of Kiev."

The Coeur d'Alene Symphony will be joined by the Whitworth Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of concertmaster Dr. Philip Baldwin.

The added personnel will create the huge sound required by such a monumental work.

Concert tickets are available from the symphony office (765-3833), online at www.cdasymphony.org, Great Harvest Bread Co., Burt's Music, or at the door.
