Chiropractic and the immune system

The term for the interplay between the nervous system and immune system is neural immunoregulation. Improper functioning of the nerve system due to spinal misalignments are stressful to the body and cause abnormal changes that lead to a poorly coordinated immune responses. Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to boost the coordinated responses of the nervous system and immune system.

Chiropractic care was first linked to improved immunity during the deadly flu epidemic of 1917 and 1918. The funny thing was: Chiropractic patients fared better than the general population. This observation spurred a study of the field. The data reported that flu victims under chiropractic care had an estimated .25 percent death rate, a lot less than the normal rate of 5 percent among flu victims who did not receive chiropractic care.

Subluxation is the term for misalignments of the spine that cause compression and irritation of nerve pathways affecting organ systems of the body. According to researchers, subluxations lead to altered measures of immune function and increased susceptibility to a variety of diseases.

Dr. Ronald Paro, Ph.D., chief of cancer prevention at New York's Preventative Medicine Institute found that those who received regular chiropractic care over a five-year period had a 200 percent greater immune competence than those who had not received chiropractic care. The chiropractic group showed a 400 percent greater immune competence than people with cancer and other serious diseases.

Dr. Paro stated, "When applied in a clinical framework, I have never seen a group other than this chiropractic group to experience a 200 percent increase over the normal patients. This is why it is so dramatically important. We have never seen such a positive improvement in a group..."

Wellness based chiropractors analyze the spine for subluxations and give corrective adjustments to reduce the stress on the nervous system and keep your immune system strong.
