Jean Ward Prohaska, 85

Jean Ward Prohaska, a master of home-style cuisine and baking, oil drilling rights investor and faithful child of God, died on September 10 in Boise. She was 85. She was a culinary arts instructor throughout her life. Classes were offered through junior colleges, university extension offices and local community educational services in four states. A master of savory dishes in the home-style cooking tradition, she was recognized for her unique blend of Southern style using the French-inspired techniques of Chef Julia Child. She was also a master baker with expertise in all facets of the art with influences as diverse as French pastry and Lebanese flat-bread techniques. She was born Velma Jean Ward to Elvin Baker Ward and Velma Ward on January 6, 1928 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Both sides of her family participated as Sooners in the Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889. Later, the Ward family was instrumental in the advancement of automobiles and an improved road system in Oklahoma. Prohaska grew up in Stillwater where she later graduated from Oklahoma State University. She engaged in graduate studies at the University of Tulsa. She was married to former NCAA cross-country national champion and All-America athlete Ramon Darold Prohaska until his death in 1996. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and P.E.O., where her membership included various officer roles. She was also a member of Kappa Delta Sorority and Daughters of the American Revolution. Prohaska is survived by Ronald Ray Prohaska, Nancy Jean Thompson, Daniel Ward Prohaska, Thomas Frank Prohaska and Benjamin Elvin Prohaska. Eight grandchildren also survive her. At her request, no funeral or memorial service is being held.
