STERLING, Colo. - North Idaho split its two matches at the Pizza Hut Invitational on Friday at Northeastern Junior College.

The Cardinals won their second match of the day, beating Casper College, 25-22, 26-24, 25-13.

"We had a 10-minute break after a Western Nebraska match, that left us feeling a little down with ourselves, before we played against Casper," NIC coach Miles Kydd said. "The question we needed to answer was, 'How will we respond to a tough loss? And are we the kind of team that can deal with what is presently in front of us?'Give the athletes a lot of credit for rebounding with a win but we felt like we regained a little of our swagger after a convincing 25-13 third game win."

Leeta Grap spearheaded the offense with 12 kills and two blocks. Anyssa Matheson had nine kills and a block, while Britney Chilcott came up with eight kills and two blocks.

In the first match, Western Nebraska Community College defeated North Idaho College 17-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-22.

Grap contributed with 15 points, with 12 kills, two aces and one block. Larissa Claassen had 11 kills and five blocks, while Russia Robinson came up with 25 digs.

"This was a team that we had played earlier this season and felt that we were capable of better against them the second time around," Kydd said. "But we had too many unforced errors on our side of the net and WNCC did a nice job of disrupting our offense."

North Idaho College faces Seward County and Iowa Western today.

NIC men win tourney,

set school record

BILLINGS, Mont. - The North Idaho College men's golf team set a school record by shooting a 267 on Friday, winning the Yellowjacket Invitational.

The team score was the lowest round the tournament has ever had. MSU-Billings finished second. The Cardinals shot a total two-day score of 560, beating MSU-Billings by eight strokes.

"We got off to a great start," NIC coach Derrick Thompson said. "We played some pretty tough competition. MSU-Billings is a Division II school. We were the only two-year school there."

NIC's Chris Cremer won the tournament, he shot 61 on Thursday and he shot an 8-under-par 64 on Friday.

Angus Montgomery of NIC shot a 73 on Thursday and a 64 Friday in the tournament to finish second, in the tournament hosted by Montana State University-Billings.

The women's team improved by 31 shots in the second round, shooting 339 after shooting 371 the first round. NIC finished seventh.

Jennie Williams was tied for 22nd with a 171.

Both of the Cardinal teams play on Sept. 30-Oct. 1 in the Concordia University Invitational in Portland.

"It was nice to see the girls bounce back," Thompson said. "I could tell they weren't nearly as nervous. It was good to get those jitters out of the way."
