BLIND: Two Moose inspire

| September 13, 2013 9:00 PM

I read Saturday’s article about Moose the Lab who is not only blind but also has no eyes. It’s a great animal interest story.

We also have a Moose (the Husky) with no eyes. He has been blind for 10 of his 11 1/2 years of life. We rescued him when we lived in the Dallas area which is a survival story in itself. He was barely a year old when we noticed a clouding in his eyes. First thought was that it was cataracts but found out it was glaucoma. He went blind first but had further complications and, like the other Moose, his eyes were removed surgically. Also like the other Moose, his eyelids were sewn shut and he appears only to be “sleeping.”

We moved here in 2004, built a house in Wolf Lodge on 20 acres. Moose has never seen Idaho, let alone our property here. Moose hikes with us around our property and you mostly would not recognize that he is blind. Many times he is the lead dog on the familiar trails that we take. He isn’t doing too well now, slowing down very noticeably, but he still loves his hikes.

It’s pretty neat that there are two Moose dogs without eyes who are so strong and inspirational to the owners.
