Jolliff scores twice for T-Wolves in loss

| September 12, 2013 12:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE - Lake City forward Alissa Jolliff scored two quick goals on assists by Sydney Quimby on Wednesday, but the Timberwolves could not hold onto the early lead in a 3-2 nonleague loss to the visiting Lewis and Clark Tigers of Spokane at the Irma Anderl Sports Complex.

Jolliff scored right away, in the 11th and 12th minutes for Lake City (1-1), which hosts Lewiston to open 5A Inland Empire League play today.

Lewis and Clark kept chipping away, scoring their first goal in the 13th minute. Two goals in the second half sealed the deal.

"We gave up a couple unfortunate goals trying to find a rhythm," Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. "We're really looking for our experienced players to step up, which they will. There were a couple of game management issues, I had a couple injuries."

Jolliff tweaked her hamstring during the game and outside fullback Kinzie Hague had a bruised ankle. Outside fullback Kelsi Grinde did not play due to a torn miniscus.

SPOKANE - While playing a player down in the last 24 minutes of Wednesday's nonleague game against Rogers, Coeur d'Alene Charter came up short, losing 2-1.

Abby Bartlett scored eight seconds into the second half for the Panthers (5-1-1), on an assist by Emily Osborne-Moss, which tied the game at 1.

However, a penalty kick in the 57th minute by Reba Julian of Rogers was the difference.

"We made an early mistake so we played from behind," Coeur d'Alene Charter coach David Baxter said. "We equalized, we played well in the second half. We had a penalty in the box that resulted in a red card for one of our defenders. We still generated good pressure, we rolled the dice and put an extra attacker to try and equalize but it didn't happen for us."

Coeur d'Alene Charter hosts Timberlake at Community United Methodist Field Saturday.

First half - 1, Rog, Mattea Steeneck (unassisted), 6:02. Second half - 2, CCA, Abby Bartlett (Emily Osborne-Moss), 40:08. 3, Reba Julian (penalty kick), 56:13.

Shots on goal - CCA 12, Rog 8.

Saves - CCA Jackie Jensen 6, Kaitlynn Ingram 11.

Two quarterbacks, one starter: Though he expects to play both quarterbacks, Petrino says Chalich, a redshirt freshman from Coeur d'Alene High, is the starter, and will start for the third time in three games, and McCain will spell him at times.

"They both have to do their jobs to help us win," Petrino said.

Chalich is 41 of 59 for 412 yards and one touchdown, with no interceptions. McCain has only thrown two passes, completing one, but is Idaho's leading rusher - a telling stat in itself - with 73 yards on 12 carries. Running back Jerrel Brown has 71 yards on seven carries.

"Until we start playing better around them, there's just a lot of pressure on the two of them, and they've got to run and make plays with their feet," Petrino said of his quarterbacks.

Last year, their only Pac-12 win was in the season finale against archrival Washington.

This year, "we know what it feels like to win," said cornerback Damante Horton, who was named the Pac-12 defensive player of the week for his two key interceptions against Southern Cal, including one he returned 70 yards for WSU's only touchdown.

"We've got a little swagger," Horton said.

Defensive lineman Ioane Gauta said the Cougars consider themselves the nation's best defense after holding USC to 193 total yards.

Washington State will be favored to win its next two games, at home against Southern Utah and Idaho. Their next big test should come when they host No. 5 Stanford during Washington State's annual game in Seattle.
