| September 10, 2013 9:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE - Daughters of the American Revolution invites students in grades 5 through 12 to participate in two American History essay contests.

Students in public, private or parochial schools, or those who are homeschooled, are eligible. Teachers are encouraged to integrate the contests into their curriculum.

The Lt. George Farragut Chapter of DAR is sponsoring the local contest.

In the first contest, fifth- through eighth-graders will be asked to pretend they are a boy or girl during the colonial fight for freedom. Using historical facts, they are to discuss how the war has affected their life. Entries should be titled "The Lives of Children During the American Revolution." Students may portray either an historical or fictional child.

The second contest is for students from ninth through 12 grades. They will be asked to discuss the similarities and differences between the ways in which Christopher Columbus and George Washington dealt with and overcame the challenges and adversities they faced. What can Americans apply to their own lives from the experiences of these men? Essays should be titled "How Do Americans View Christopher Columbus and George Washington Today?" The length is to be 800-1,200 words.

Certificates will be issued to all who participate. Winners from each grade will receive a medal from the Lt. George Farragut Chapter and a monetary award. First place winners will advance to state competition.

The deadline is Dec. 20. For more information or to obtain the address for mailing essays, contact Regent Connie McGee at (208) 667-8299, or email ltgeorgefarragut@yahoo.com.
