A variety of paintings and more intently the classes to create them are offered at Art de Vine. The gallery and studio opened last month in the south end of Gibbs Center at 1509 Northwest Blvd.

The mostly watercolor work of professional artist and teacher Barbara Irvine is displayed throughout the place. Her specialty, ironically, is water color - that is, paintings of water scenes - lakes, rivers, oceans and the life and vessels they support.

Her variety of classes offer different techniques and skills for adults, teens and children in watercolor, oil, drawing and composition in the studio and on location. Irvine has extensive teaching experience and has won numerous awards for her work.

Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Phone 446-9876.

New veterans' clinic planned

A community-based outpatient clinic for military veterans is under construction at 915 W. Emma Ave. This 16,225-square-foot facility will almost triple the size of the existing clinic at 2177 Ironwood Center Drive.

With its completion planned for April, the clinic will offer services in mental health, physical therapy, audiology, an eye clinic, home-based primary care, social work, patient education, a pharmacy, tele-health and a limited lab.

Dean Cotton is clinic manager.

Qdoba opening in Hayden

Fresh, handcrafted meals are the specialty of Qdoba Mexican Grill. The "fast-casual" restaurant will open the week of Sept. 23 in the former Blockbuster space of Prairie Shopping Center at 245 W. Prairie Ave. in Hayden.

Customers participate in the creation of their entrees of tacos, burritos, salads, quesadillas, nachos, tortilla soup and more. Customers select their ingredients with options of five salsas, guacamole and several sauces. It also offers kids' meals and catering.

The restaurant will seat 56 customers inside and 16 on the patio. Hours will be 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays. Check www.qdoba.com.

Now for the Tidbits

- Watch for seasonal Halloween stores opening soon.

- Rumors are that a natural foods store is being built where the Elmer's Restaurant used to be next to Red Lobster at 222 W. Neider Ave. Elmer's is now where Perkins was between Appleway and I-90.

- Vertical Earth will be moving from Riverstone to East Sherman Ave.

- Now we hear that Golden Corral restaurant is a "go" again across Highway 95 from K-Mart.

- Now that school is started, once again students are forced to walk on trails or in the street on Best Avenue near Borah Elementary and on Margaret Avenue between Coeur d'Alene High School and Canfield Middle School. These streets need continuous sidewalks.

- Here's the first sentence of a Page 1 story this week: "Wave the checkered flag, nearly everyone is calling it a success." The problem is that a comma can't connect those phrases; it's called a comma splice.

The best solution is a semicolon taking the comma's place if the phrases are strongly related. Don't overdo semicolons though; you aren't that bright. The second solution is adding a conjunction such as "and" or "but" behind the comma or a connector such as "because" or "since." The third choice is make two short sentences, especially if you want two snappy statements.
