HYDROS: Above and beyond

| September 8, 2013 9:00 PM

Congratulations to Doug and his crew of volunteers for a successful event!

As a resident of Silver Beach, I had some concerns about the impact of the hydroplane race on our area. When Doug Miller and John Stone met with property owners beforehand, they addressed our issues and I was very pleased with the results. There were lots of portable “potties” and with the use of the car passes, we were not bothered with unwanted cars driving through our neighborhood and blocking the road.

I thought the return of the hydroplane races to Coeur d’Alene in the Silver Beach location went very smoothly and those responsible deserve a pat on the back. Although there may have been a few “kinks,” it appeared things were handled when needed. In addition to Doug and his crew, the race sponsors and vendors should be thanked for doing their part to make the race possible. I hope the Diamond Cup for 2013 ended up in the black and we will be able to look forward to the race again next year. It was a labor of love for Doug, and achieving his dream helped thousands share in his hydro excitement.

It was a thrill to hear the older, restored unlimited hydros when they provided the exhibition run on Saturday. And, it was especially nice to have the radio commentary by Steve Montgomery and his team during the weekend, which added good background and understanding for all listening. We also appreciated the courteous and friendly enthusiasm expressed by the race drivers and crews, who were great about offering autographs and pit tours to those interested.

Kudos to all involved with the Diamond Cup.
