Reece helps Timberlake run past Riverside in opener

MOSCOW - Quinton Reece rushed for 91 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries the Timberlake Tigers beat the Riverside Rams 27-14 in the nonleague football opener for both schools at the Kibbie Dome on Friday night.

Daniel Buck, who finished with 96 yards rushing, scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter for Timberlake, which hosts Grangeville next Friday.

"We had a bit of a heart-to-heart with some of the boys at halftime," Timberlake offensive coordinator Brian Kluss said. "They got after it in the second half and played the way they needed to win a football game and really dominated on both sides of the ball in the second half."

Timberlake had 218 yards rushing in the second half after gaining 90 in the first half.

MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. - The host Cardinals (1-0) scored the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter, recovering their own fumble into the end zone to beat the Lumberjacks in a nonleague game.

St. Maries (1-1) led 28-20 entering the fourth quarter.

"The kids just competed very, very hard, but it was a game of missed opportunities," St. Maries coach Craig Tefft said. "They ran the Wing-T and ran it well and we had a tough time stopping it. We had a few dropped passes and at the end of the night, they just played better than us."

St. Maries has a bye next Friday and returns to action at Deer Park on Sept. 20.

PLUMMER - Jake Pfeiffer threw three touchdown passes and ran for one score as the visiting Warriors beat the Knights in North Star League play.

"We played pretty well," said Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman, a longtime assistant making his debut as Knights head coach. "Early in the game, we had two big turnovers. We were ready to score, we had the ball within the 20. Those turnovers cost us. Kootenai took advantage of them and scored."

Next Friday, Kootenai (1-1) plays at Deary and Lakeside (0-1) plays at Wallace.

COEUR d'ALENE - The host Vikings defeated Lakeland 25-17, 25-15, 25-14 and Gonzaga Prep 25-20, 25-17, 28-26 to improve to 4-0.

Against Lakeland, Sydney Williams and Megan Ramseyer had nine kills each for Coeur d'Alene. Ramseyer had 17 assists, Cameron Cardenas 10. Williams had six digs and three aces, Miranda Miller had five aces, Ramseyer three.

For Lakeland (1-2), Kelly Ramus and Haley Rotchford had four kills each. Jen Thomas had 28 assists, Rotchford six digs and two aces, Ramus five blocks.

Against Gonzaga Prep, Megan Ramseyer had 28 assists, eight kills and 10 digs for Coeur d'Alene. Miranda Miller had nine kills and 10 digs, Morgan Leifer seven blocks, Sydney Williams five blocks.

For Gonzaga Prep, Macy Collins had 10 kills, Sara Mackin 15 assists and 10 digs.

"Good team effort tonight," Coeur d'Alene coach Dee Pottenger said. "We did a good job blocking, but I was more pleased with our scrappy defense."

On Tuesday, Coeur d'Alene travels to Lewiston, and Lakeland is home vs. Lake City.

COLBERT, Wash. - The Trojans welcomed the debut of another weapon to complement returning Class 5A state player of the year Timmy Mueller.

While Mueller scored four goals, several Trojans got in on the action. They included Hawaiian transfer Jarry Southerland, who scored two goals and had an assist as Post Falls, the defending Idaho 5A champion, beat the defending 3A state champs from Washington.

"We were looking good today," Post Falls coach Gabe Lawson said. "It's usually the Timmy Mueller Show. Today, Jarry was eligible to play. He was phenomenal all game with Timmy. It was a very good day as far as some of the other guys getting confidence in scoring."

Ameen Gondo had two assists for Post Falls, which plays Tuesday at Sandpoint.

ST. MARIES - Jesse Suchoski scored three first-half goals, leading the Lumberjacks past the Maniacs in an Intermountain League match.

"The kids did a good job of moving the ball around," said St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo, whose team lost 4-0 at Bonners Ferry on Thursday.

Jacob McGregor had two goals for St. Maries (2-1, 2-1 IML), which travels to Moscow on Tuesday.
