VA: Hospital does stellar job

| September 1, 2013 9:00 PM

The letter to the editor published last week written by Bill Brooks touched/angered me greatly. For I too am a military veteran having served my country for more than 22 years. I also visited the wall and utilize the VA as my medical facility. As such, I feel qualified or at least compelled to respond to this letter.

The wall is such an overwhelming tribute to our Vietnam veterans. It not only immortalized those who died, it also honors those that survived. It goes without saying that the Vietnam War was an unpopular war at a very delicate time in our history. The people who served own a piece of my heart and my undying respect.

I hope that people reading your comments realize that this is one man’s opinion. I have personally been treated by the VA facilities in Boise, Salt Lake, Portland, Seattle and Spokane. Never once have I thought that I received any less than stellar treatment and personalized care.

As far as the fence and carriage lights are concerned, I feel that making the grounds and facility more appealing is part of the whole healing process. Would you feel more comfortable receiving your medical treatment from a place that was old, outdated and falling apart? These men and women that utilize the VA facility deserve a modern, well kept facility including the grounds.

Although I have never noticed a lack of handicapped parking, I do know that a shuttle bus/golf cart cruises the parking lot to assist veterans transiting from the parking lot to the hospital. Also, there are volunteer agencies that will pick you up at your home and deliver you to the front door of the hospital.

Lastly, I would urge you to consider volunteering some of your time to get involved with a VA steering committee. You can then have input to future changes/enhancements to your local VA hospital.
