WEDDING

Sundquist-Amendola

Annie (Bowman) Sundquist and Gary Amendola were married in their Coeur d'Alene backyard on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013.

Judge Clark Peterson officiated. Peterson is a former colleague of the groom, who is managing partner of Amendola, Doty, and Brumley. The bride is retired from city of Orlando Parks and Recreation. Gary's son Joshua was best man and daughter Jessica was maid of honor. Pepper, the family Bassett hound, made a timely appearance at the conclusion of the ceremony.

The weekend started Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, with out-of-town guests reconnecting on the Lake Coeur d'Alene Scenic Cruise. The ceremony took place Saturday under tall pines in their backyard. College friend Harvey Cutler delighted guests by recounting the 40-year history of the couple and friends who lived in Park City, Utah, during the 1970s. Bistro on Spruce catered the supper and friends brought pie and ice cream to cap off the evening. On Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, out-of-towners enjoyed a brunch with musical entertainment by Midge Bowman, mother of the bride, and friend Jan Zinn. A barbecue Sunday night completed a very full and fun weekend.

MILESTONE BIRTHDAY

Pearl Brown

95th Birthday

Pearl Brown celebrated her 95th birthday on Wednesday, Aug. 28.

She was born in Isabel, S.D., on Aug. 28, 1918, and has been a resident at Heritage Place, 702 W. Walnut Ave., Coeur d'Alene, for the past five years. She is still very active, independent, talented, never complains, plays the piano there during the noon hour and enjoys the good meals.

Woodrow Wilson was president at the time of her birth. She has two sons, Allen and Lonnie Brown, who are very protective of her, taking her for walks, visiting her often and taking her for "fun" rides now and then.

She worked at the Eagles for more than 20 years as office clerk and bookkeeper retiring in May 1980. She spent her lunch hour at the Hudson's Cafe nearby and when the place was crowded, Howard would bring the hamburgers to the office. All she wanted for her birthday was a "Huddy Burger" - the best hamburgers in town.

MILITARY

Navy Midshipman Steven E. Price, son of Marie H. and Edward L. Price of Dalton Gardens, recently completed "Plebe" Summer at the U.S. Navy Academy.

Plebe Summer began on Induction Day, June 27 and concluded after seven challenging weeks of basic midshipman training.

The pressure and rigor of Plebe Summer is carefully designed to help "plebes" prepare for their first academic year at the Naval Academy and the four years of challenges leading to graduation and commissioning as a Navy or Marine Corps Officer. Plebe Summer is run by upper-class midshipmen who are specially trained in their leadership roles to effectively develop plebes into successful midshipmen.

Plebe Summer activities include swimming, martial arts, basic rock climbing, obstacle, endurance and confidence courses designed to develop physical, mental and team-building skills, as well as 40 training hours devoted to the instruction of infantry drill and formal parades.

Throughout the summer, new midshipmen rapidly gain general knowledge of seamanship, navigation, damage control, sailing and handling yard patrol craft. Plebes also learn how to use 9mm pistols and M-16 rifles.

Approximately 1,200 candidates are selected each year for the Academy's plebe or freshman class, and each student is required to participate in Plebe Summer. This year the Naval Academy received more than 17,500 applications for the Class of 2017.

Price is a 2013 graduate of Coeur d'Alene High School in Coeur d'Alene.
