Derrick's direction
RATHDRUM - In his first season starting as the 4A Lakeland Hawks' quarterback, Tyrel Derrick had never accounted for four touchdowns in a single game.
That changed Friday at Corbit Field, as Derrick pulled an "Al Bundy", passing for three touchdowns and rushing for one more, in a 34-6 nonleague rout of visiting 3A Timberlake.
Derrick was perfect in his opening drive for Lakeland (3-4), going 4 for 4 for 61 yards, including an 11-yard strike to fullback Colton Butcher in the end zone with 6:31 left in the first quarter.
Derrick's second TD pass came with 10:28 left in the second quarter, on a post-corner route to receiver Brett Webb from 9 yards away. His third was a 17-yard strike to tight end Brian Howell in the second quarter, which put the Hawks ahead, 27-0. Derrick's fourth TD came on a 55-yard sprint down the Lakeland sideline, thanks in part to a key block by guard Jackson Kunas.
"I can't say enough about how our team did," Derrick said. "I just threw it up there and let my athletes go get it."
Lakeland has now won four straight meetings from Timberlake.
Lakeland forced three turnovers, none bigger than an interception by Webb in the end zone, off quarterback Bryce Johnson of Timberlake (4-3) late in the second quarter, which preserved a 27-0 halftime lead.
Butcher forced a fumble that was recovered by free safety Zeke Weiss, which set up Howell's TD catch.
"Timberlake's a really good football team," Lakeland coach Tim Kiefer said. "We knew coming into this game if we didn't play a complete game, then we would lose. We challenged our kids and they came out and did a great job."
Kiefer was proud of Derrick's play.
"Ty came out and responded," Kiefer said. "He did a tremendous job and for a first-year quarterback, he's far surpassing my expectations."
Timberlake was able to move the ball quite a few times, but turnovers hurt. Tigers running back Preston Rhodes rushed for 74 yards on 10 carries, and Josh Lampert spoiled the shutout with a fourth-quarter touchdown run from 9 yards out and he ran for 60 yards on seven carries.
"You can't have good field position like we did tonight and not cash in," Timberlake coach Roy Albertson said. "They scored some points because we made mistakes. They used their speed against us; that essentially was the ballgame."
Lakeland plays a 4A Inland Empire League game next week at home against Moscow, which lost 21-14 to visiting Sandpoint on Friday night.
Timberlake plays host to Priest River next Friday in Intermountain League action.
