Rivals play to draw, again

| October 6, 2013 9:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE - For the second time this season thus far, the visiting Coeur d'Alene Vikings and Lake City Timberwolves played to a draw in 5A Inland Empire League play Saturday at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

"We had some opportunities, but things didn't go our way," Lake City coach Chad Beadell said. "It was a good back and forth game, but one where neither team could develop a solid goal scoring opportunity. With us and Coeur d'Alene, it doesn't matter what the records are, it's always a close game. Both teams played really hard."

Tanner Horton had four saves for Lake City (7-1-3, 3-0-2 5A IEL), which can wrap up the league title with a win at Post Falls on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Garrett Boyce had six saves for Coeur d'Alene (7-1-4, 2-1-2), which hosts Post Falls to conclude the regular season on Thursday.

SANDPOINT - Sandpoint senior Christian Cook scored a minute into the game, and Joab Logan finished with a hat trick, leading the Bulldogs past the Bengals in nonleague play.

The Bulldogs (10-2-1) are riding a wave of momentum, posting nine wins and one tie in the past 10 games, outscoring their opponents by a decisive 29-2 margin in the process.

Cook got things going on the first corner kick of the game, and Logan took over from there, as the Bulldogs dominated possession.

"Christian played awesome. He had a nice finish on a ball that got over a few heads at the near post, and he was there to finish," said Bulldogs coach Adam Tajan. "All in all it was a real good performance. It's nice to get five goals at the end of the day."

Jake Rookey picked up his eighth shutout of the season in goal, as the back four of Sandpoint limited the Bengals (5-9) to just one shot on goal.

"They ran right up the middle of our defense and were playing the ball right through the middle of the field," St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo said. "Cody (Posselt) played a good game (seven saves), but when they shoot from three yards away, there's not much he can do about that. We'll see how it shakes up at districts."
